Aba at Bal Harbor Shops Invites Foodies to Take Their Taste Buds on a Mediterranean Journey

2023 is upon us, but it’s not too late to try something new, especially if it’s delicious food you’re trying. Deco’s new destination will take your taste buds on a journey through the Mediterranean.

Mediterranean flavors take hold at Bal Harbor Shops.

Aba hails from Chicago and Austin, and celebrity chef CJ Jacobson (you might recognize him from Bravo’s “Top Chef”) tells Deco that the place is full of bold flavours.

CJ Jacobson: “Lots of citrus, lots of herbs, very, very fresh, lots of vegetables.”

Mediterranean here means more than just Greek cuisine.

CJ Jacobson: “We go more to the Eastern Mediterranean, like more of the Arabian Peninsula, and a little bit of North Africa.”

So, alongside traditional staples like smoked garlic hummus, the menu includes dishes like the signature salmon kebabs.

CJ Jacobson: “We pickle it, and it has vegetables, onions, and red bell peppers, and it’s topped with Aleppo, which is a dried chili from Syria.”

Another colorful and fresh seafood option is hamachi with charred avocado and kiwi.

CJ Jacobson: “The sauce is made with hibiscus. It’s kind of cool, playful, summery with avocados, very California.”

The dishes are all light, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t leave room for dessert, which is definitely a real highlight.

Bugatsa has layers of puff pastry, vanilla custard, cinnamon and orange, all mixed together tableside. Hey, someone pass me the spoon!

Tal Kedem: “I thought the food was very tasty. It only got better from each course. The drinks were great, the food was delicious and the desserts were sweet and light. Everything was very filling.”
