At least 1 person questioned in Deerfield Beach Park shooting; friend ID victim

Deerfield Beach, Florida. (WSVN) – Authorities have detained at least one Filmed at Deerfield Beach Park A teenager was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Cell phone video captured the immediate aftermath of the incident Wednesday afternoon at the Westside Park football field in the 400 block of SW Second Street

Pixelated footage captured the confusion after the gunshots rang out.

“What just happened?” the person who filmed the video asked the witness.

The witness responded that he believed someone had been shot.

Seconds after the shots fired, people were seen rushing to help the victims and calling for help.

“I heard sirens, I saw people running, and then I heard, ‘Oh, someone’s been shot.’ I just went to pray,” said local resident R’meishia Williams.

Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office said they received a report of the shooting just after 5 p.m.

“The caller said someone had just been shot in a park, an unknown person,” a 911 dispatcher told first responders.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units responded to the scene and transported the teen to Broward Health North.

7News cameras captured the family anxiously awaiting news about the teen’s condition on Wednesday night. As of Thursday evening, he was in critical condition.

A spokesman for Broward County Public Schools confirmed Ferguson was a student at Deerfield Beach High School.

Friends of the victim identified him as Rich Ferguson Thursday afternoon.

“It was tough hearing what happened to him last night,” Deerfield Beach Bucks head coach Trahman Hall said.

Friends of Hall and Ferguson said he was a sophomore and a standout football player with a bright future.

“He said, ‘Coach, I’m ready for college,'” Hall said.

Hall said Ferguson was the team’s safety.

Friends of the victim agreed with the coach, saying he was focused on life after high school.

“He’s done nothing wrong. He just finished playing football, go home. This guy has done nothing wrong,” said the teen’s friend, Nick Williams.

“Ricky loves being in the game, loves being in the locker room, loves being with his teammates,” Hall said. “He’s funny, I mean, charming. He’s just a really likable young man.”

Authorities confirmed on Thursday that one person was in custody, but did not specify whether anyone had been arrested.

While few details have been released, Hall said he knew the shooting was an accident.

Residents who live near the park say the shootings need to stop.

“This is a sad day for our city,” said local resident Terry Scott. “It’s sad, but I believe we can pull this together. We have to stand up.”

“A tragedy, a sad situation, without any cause,” Hall said.

A BCPS spokesperson wrote in a statement: “BCPS’s thoughts and prayers are with the students and their families. We stand ready to assist them and the entire Deerfield Beach High school community.”

Detectives said the shooting is still under investigation.
