FORT LAUDERDALE — It looks like Fort Lauderdale might be pumping the brakes on making a deal with a private company to build a new water plant to replace Fiveash, the 68-year-old treatment plant once famously described by the mayor as held together by spit and gum.

The estimated cost of the new plant has skyrocketed from $385 million to $485 million partly due to inflation and global supply chain woes, city officials say. The price jumps to $635 million when you add in the cost of installing $150 million in pipes.

The company would also manage and maintain the plant, with an expected opening of 2026. IDE Technologies would oversee design and construction, with financing provided by Ridgewood.
