Cyclist from St Petersburg dies in Zephyrhills crash

A 28-year-old St. Petersburg man was struck and killed by a van driver while riding his bicycle on County Road 54 in Zephyrhills on Wednesday, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

According to the Highway Patrol, the cyclist was riding eastbound on CR 54 near 16th Street around 5:10 a.m. when the driver of the van, also heading east, hit him from behind. The cyclist died at the scene.

Mounties say the cyclist was riding without the lights on and the van’s driver, a 25-year-old Zephyrhills man, was out of sight before the crash.

Due to Marcy’s Law, Highway Patrol usually does not release the names of those involved in crashes.
