Flight cancellations disrupt cruise plans

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — With Southwest Airlines grounding thousands of flights this week, cruise passengers won’t be sailing anytime soon.

Sari Engle of Gardiner, Illinois, is one of them.

“I’m sad because the past two days I’ve woken up and thought, ‘Oh, we’re not leaving,'” she said. “I’m still disappointed that they didn’t act immediately when they figured out this was going to be an issue.”

Engel and her sister are scheduled to fly to Miami on Tuesday, planning to soak up the sun on South Beach before embarking on a five-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Silhouette on Saturday.

“That way, if the weather is bad or you know holiday traffic is slow, we’ll definitely be there by the 29th to catch the cruise,” said Engle, who spent 18 months planning the trip.

But as fate would have it, Engel was still forced to cancel due to Southwest’s travel nightmare, leading to a costly chain reaction.

“The car and the person to pick you up, and the dining reservations were canceled, and we booked a golf cart in Key West, and I’m trying to get my deposit back from there, and I have an Airbnb in Miami,” Engel said.

Luckily, she purchased insurance for the cruise, which travel experts recommend for any vacation.

Laura Reece of Reece Worldwide Travel said: “Of course it will never replace planning a year or two of family holidays, especially post-COVID, but it will compensate you for the cost of doing so. “

While Engle waits for a refund from the cruise line, she and her younger sister are on a family vacation, making the most of their vacation with the next few days in the windy city. They are also looking forward to entering the high seas in the near future.

“I’ll most likely fly Southwest again, and I’ll definitely be on a cruise,” she said. “We’ve booked other cruises.”

Cruise Network According to reports, 500 passengers failed to make it to the Carnival festivities, which departed Miami on Tuesday, despite delays of several hours. It has a passenger capacity of 5,374.

Some passengers choose to drive thousands of miles to reach their destination.
