Heat climb over .500 with 18-17 win over Lakers 112-98

Miami –Jimmy Butler scored 27 points, Bam Adebayo had 23 points and 14 rebounds, and the Miami Heat beat the Los Angeles Lakers 112-98 on Wednesday night to top .500.

Tyler Herro had 18 points and nine assists for the Heat (18-17). Caleb Martin had 13 points and Gabe Vincent had 12.

LeBron James had 27 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Lakers on the second night of back-to-backs. Russell Westbrook and Dennis Schroder each added 15 points for the Lakers.

Even without point guard Kyle Lowry, who is out for personal reasons, the Heat are nearly flawless in terms of basketball. Over three quarters, they had four turnovers to the Lakers’ 19 — and those turnovers led to a stunning 25-0 over that span.

Final numbers for turnovers: 31 for the Heat, two for the Lakers. Miami forced 26 turnovers but committed only six.

The Heat led by as many as 22 points, their third-largest margin of the season and their largest since Oct. 26.

The 14-point final margin also represented Miami’s third-biggest win of the season, though it wasn’t easy in the end.

The Lakers cut their lead to seven late in the fourth quarter before Herro restored a double-digit lead with a 3-pointer from the left wing with 2:01 to go. Miami was blocked on the Lakers’ next possession, and on the Heat’s ensuing trip, Butler made an easy layup with 1:15 left to seal the win.

“We stayed ahead,” Adebayo said. “That’s the most important thing.”

The Lakers trailed 14-21. It was James’ team’s second-worst record in 35 games; Cleveland started 11-24 as a rookie in 2003-04.

It was his last race at age 37; he turns 38 on Friday. James is averaging 30.1 points per game at age 37, by far the most in NBA history. Karl Malone averaged 23.2 points per game at age 37; that’s the second-best right now.
