TOKYO.- The selector of JapanHajime Moriyasu, whose team defeated Spain Y Germany in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, before falling in the round of 16, he renewed his contract until the 2026 World Cup, announced Wednesday the Japan Federation of Football(JFA).
Hajime MoriyasuThe 54-year-old thus becomes the first Japan coach to retain his position after a World Cup.
“It is truly the job that fills me the most. It’s the job that gives me the opportunity to compete on the international stage while being proud to be Japanese. It is for what I have decided to accept the offer of the JFA”, explained the selector during a press conference in Tokyo.
Former Japanese international player (1992-1996), assumed the role of coach after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he already worked as an assistant coach.
In Qatar, the “Blue Samurai” failed to reach their quarter-final goal, something that would have been unprecedented for Japanwhen they fell on penalties in the round of 16 against Croatia (1-1 after extra time, 3-1 on penalties).
But the Japanese managed to beat Spain and Germany, two leaders in world football, in the group stage by the same 2-1 result. Japan finished first in group E, in which they were also Costa Rica.
For several years, the Japanese have shown themselves to be the most competitive team on the Asian continent, despite the fact that they have not managed to capitalize forcefully in an international tournament.
That is the hope with this new group of players in the national teamwho by the hand of a Moriyasu who will now have the opportunity to continue with the work plan that he has established in recent times, looks with a very promising future towards the next World Cup in North America.
