Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg outlined parameters for prosecuting teens as adults in criminal cases.

In some cases, his hands were tied and the suspect had to stand trial as a minor, while in other cases the legislature would have made it mandatory for adults to bring charges depending on the crime, Arenberg said.

“The juvenile system is for rehabilitation and the adult system is for punishment,” Arenberg said. “But some crimes are so serious that they put the community at risk and we have no choice but to try young people as adults — for example, if it’s a gun crime.”
