Less than 12 hours after his most prolific performance of the season, Bucs tailback Leonard Fournette put his head down again and confronted his critics directly via Twitter.
Along the way, he showed off his 162-yard effort 19-16 over the Cardinals in overtime on Sunday night Lisfranc came despite an injury – one of the worst foot problems of his career.
“I hate when people are here just saying I’m out of shape etc,” Fournette tweeted at 10:24 a.m. Monday.
“Y’all understand I play with lisfranc(sic) on my feet every week and barley(sic) can push my feet off, but by the grace of God I’m going to keep proving you all wrong.”
The tweet was deleted shortly thereafter.
“He had a good run (Sunday), so I don’t know the severity of it yet,” Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said during a regular media conference on Monday. “The training room doesn’t open until 3pm today and I’ll get the report then.”
According to the UT Southwestern Medical Center website, Lisfranc’s injuries typically result from severe twisting of the foot resulting in fractures, dislocations, ligament strains or tears.Pirates Inside linebacker Lavonte David missed three games in December with an injury and returned in the playoffs, But admits he’s not even close to 100%.
Fournette led the Bucs (7-8) in rushing (20 carries, 72 yards) and receptions (9 catches, 90 yards) Sunday, with 4 yards on a run and 4 yards in overtime catch the ball. Even though rookie rival Rachaad White ran for 25 yards on his first two touches, he finished with just seven carries because Bowles said the staff opted to ride “hot hands” and mostly used Fournette.
“Good job. Great job,” quarterback Tom Brady said of Fournette’s performance. “He’s running really hard, on the job, tackles through the arm, runs hard, catches the ball well, passes protection well.”
