Man shot dead in Gulfport when car stolen in driveway, police say

A man tried to steal a car parked in the driveway of his Gulfport home Monday night, then shot and killed the owner’s father in the ensuing confrontation, police said.

Vinyai Yukondrai Rice, 19, faces charges of carjacking, felony attempted murder, carrying a concealed firearm and theft of a firearm.

At 6:40 p.m. Monday, Rice tried to steal a car parked in the driveway of the S 1000 block of 56th Street in Gulfport, police said. The owner confronted Rice, who was sitting in the front seat of the car, according to court records.

Police said Rice attempted to dive away and dragged the man several feet before crashing the car. The man and his father pulled Rice out of the car. Rice then fired two shots, hitting the owner’s father and causing a laceration to the man’s left upper arm, according to court records.

Relatives of the owner and passers-by pinned Rice to the ground until police arrived. Police said they determined Rice’s gun was a Ruger .38 caliber revolver that was stolen in LaGrange, Georgia, where Rice took his life.

Rice was being held Thursday in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $220,000 bond.
