NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A South Florida mother tried to strangle her 3-year-old daughter but later stabbed her to death, police said.
North Miami Beach resident Jellisa Baxter, 24, was arrested Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
Baxter confessed to the crime in a 911 call, police said.
According to a North Miami Beach police report, Baxter told a police dispatcher that she had killed her daughter.
According to the police report, when the dispatcher asked what happened, Baxter claimed that “she strangled her at first, but when that didn’t work, she stabbed her in the chest and neck.”
Police arrived at the apartment on NE 163rd Street and found Baxter in the living room, wearing a white robe, the report said. They also found the child on the ground with “several deep stab wounds to her chest, neck and face”.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
The knife was found next to the child’s body, police said.
A motive for the killing was not revealed because Baxter refused to speak to police after he was taken into custody.
Baxter is being held without bond at the Knight Correctional Center in Turner Guildford in Miami-Dade County.
