Okeechobee County man, 18, arrested in hit-and-run that killed pedestrian

Okeechobee County, Fla. — An 18-year-old Okeechobee County man was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run earlier this month.

Cameron Runyon was charged with vehicular manslaughter on $100,000 bail, escaping with disregard for safety, $25,000 bond, DUI causing death and failure to render assistance, on $250,000 bond. He was sent to the county jail.

The accident happened around 1 a.m. on Dec. 11 at SE Fifth Street and SW 16th Avenue.

Runyon is accused of assaulting Erika Smith with his pickup truck. She suffered multiple injuries, including broken bones, and later died.

When calling 911, provide a vehicle description and directions. Deputies located the vehicle near the EYDC Boys’ School at 7200 Hghway 441 and arrested the suspected driver.
