Pascoe deputy shoots, wounds suspect in New Port Richey

A Pasco County Sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a suspect who shot the deputy early Wednesday in New Port Richey, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph Nathaniel Midkiff, 34, was shot in the elbow and was taken to HCA Bayonet Point Florida Hospital where deputies said his life was not life-threatening. Midkiff was arrested on multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

The shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m. when officers received a call about a suspected stolen Honda motorcycle near the intersection of Rowan Road and Kauai Loop, according to the arrest affidavit. car. Delegates saw the Honda about 10 feet from a moving van in the parking lot. The affidavit said Midkiff stood on the rear bumper of the van.

When a representative ordered Midkiff to raise his hand, Midkiff began running down the sidewalk toward Rowan Road. During the chase, Midkiff fired a single shot with a semi-automatic pistol, the affidavit said. A pursuing deputy returned fire, firing five rounds from his mechanism pistol, hitting Midkiff in the left elbow.

Midkiff continued to flee and was later found hiding in woods near the intersection of Rowan Road and Sharpsburg Avenue and was taken into custody. Deputies found a 9mm pistol in the woods where he was hiding, according to the affidavit.

Midkiff said in an interview with investigators that he agreed to spy on another man while the motorcycle was being stolen, but deputies found no evidence of the second suspect, the affidavit said.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Midkiff was also arrested on charges of violent resistance to law enforcement, felony possession of a firearm and aggravated theft of a vehicle.

Florida law enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard sheriff’s office policy.
