South Florida 100: What’s Big in 2022, Big in 2023

Michael De Lucca, President, Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc.

last week: The story in 2022 is Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees hitting his 61st home run of the season on September 28th! Then, on October 4, 2022, Judge made history again by hitting his 62nd home run, breaking Roger Maris’ AL record of 61 held in the 1961 season. Choctaw Stadium lucky fan Corey Youmans hit his 62nd home run for Homer. Auctioneer Ken Golding, who sold the ball on Cory’s behalf, believes it will sell for more than $3 million. Congratulations to Aaron Judge on this milestone!

Looking to the future: For the first time in 65 years, Florida topped the list for population growth, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Florida’s population has grown every year since the 1940s, outpacing the U.S. average. Florida’s percentage growth since 1946 is impressive — its 2022 population is a little more than nine times its 1946 population of 2,444,000. As of July 1, 2022, Florida had an estimated 22,244,823 residents, up from 21,828,069 the previous year. Through 2023, we will see this trend continue.
